Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteers get more out of life

DO YOU ENJOY MEETING PEOPLE ???

DO YOU ENJOY A CHALLENGE ???

Have you spare time you would like to devote to a worthwhile Voluntary Project ???

We are a local charity working with and for people with a visual impairment in Dumfries & Galloway.  We offer information and support and we campaign for better services for visually impaired people.  DGAB is a user-led organisation and all of our committee members have a visual impairment.

Home Visiting:
Volunteers visit a person with a visual impairment in his or her own home on a regular weekly basis.  This is to provide companionship and help ease the isolation and loneliness that is often experienced by a person with significant sight loss.  Most frequently this will be for a cup of tea and a good chat.  Some people will appreciate being able to get out for a walk and sometimes reading the mail or even the newspaper is a big help.  Volunteers will not be involved in doing housework or other home care tasks.

Telefriends:
Volunteers provide a weekly telephone call from the DGAB office to people with a visual impairment who are waiting to be matched to a home visiting volunteer or who prefer a telephone call to a home visit.

Collectors:
In partnership with RNIB, DGAB has a number of ‘Sooty Collection Boxes’ placed throughout the region.  Sooty collectors are responsible for maintaining and emptying boxes in their own local areas at regular interval three-monthly intervals.

Audio-book Library:
Occasional help is needed to maintain the Library, by cataloguing new books and recording the catalogue onto tape,

General Help:
Occasional help is needed with the distribution of our quarterly newsletter and maintaining leaflet displays at D & G Royal Infirmary

Fundraising:
Help with fundraising events such as collection days.
